I am obsessed with it. Slate design, I love you.
No, not your blocky left menu with the white gaps. Not your flat new German-mens-magazine logo. Not the fact that you wreck yourself the second an ad chooses a weird color scheme. Not the pointlessly alien Search button, poised in your top spot. Not that little cut that gets made into the current homepage feature (I know it’s supposed to be a speech bubble metaphor, but it hurts me. Just make the triangle smaller and it’ll be totally cute, I swear).
NO
I LOVE YOUR STYLESHEET TYPOGRAPHY.
The new Slate design has hands-down-don’t-argue-with-me the fanciest type on the internet, from its ‘kickers’ (the grey all-caps guys) to the black underline ‘neath the maroon Most-Read h3s, to the sexy letterspacing on the article h1s, to the itals on the fancy little “Related in Slate” action at the bottom of most articles.
And that side menu, with the big-box contents pull-over? Fancy. Check the rollovers on that: Pristine little yellow blocks, perfectly padded. And they even tint the headlines a touch of warm grey, giving the effect of a physical highlight. Ladies and gentleman, if you’re going to design a website that serves up as much content and ads as Slate does (and God help you if you do), slate_styles_ff.css should be your Bible.
Day after day, I grind through new music, rating and deleting, rating and deleting, and only so rarely do I find a track that upon first listen becomes Song Of The Month. Today, 54 seconds into the it, I have decided that Girl Talk’s “Hold Up” is this song. You can find some downloads herrrrrr. Listen through to the last second, there are fun surprises through-OUT.
Note: This is a song the likeability of which increases with the amount/range of music you have listened to.
Additional note: This song is NSFW. And that’s the first time I’ve gotten to use that acronym on this blog!
Can anyone name the track behind the “Laffy Taffy” section? It sounds like a Wolf Parade finale, but I don’t think it is. It’s killing me.
New clients and old clients popping up everywhere, I’ve had no time to write pointlessly in this blog (which will shortly get axed and relaunched anyway).
Things I’ve been looking at online:
Pages+
Bricolage
OneButton FTP (new favorite Mac FTP client)
Weird note: Last night I tried designing an entire project in black and white, then adding color at the end. It work out a lot better than most of my projects do, and in less time. Must try in the future.
Monday: Exercise machine overload. Set body into fight-or-flight mode. Couldn’t sleep all night.
Tuesday: No internet at work. Felt tired. Still no sleep.
Wednesday: Up at 7:15 to go to a training seminar downtown. Can’t find car. Turns out: Car gone. CAR GONE. Get taxi to go to towing place. Pay unkempt man one hundred dollars. So tired. Work. Visit Mele. Home. Seeing strange images on some flat surfaces. Time to go sleep.

Can’t do a real post tonight. This week is robbing me of my youth!
Instead, check out the Chris Cunningham video for The Horrors’ Sheena Is A Parasite. I like this song (and their other songs, on MySpace, which I don’t link to) so much that I seriously signed into iTunes to PAY for it. But it’s not on there yet.
WARNING: If you don’t know who Chris Cunningham is, for God’s sake, don’t click on that link.
This video makes me a) Want to hide b) Wish I had darker hair.
In other news, Mew’s Zookeeper’s Boy is one of my new favorite songs.
Gizmodo seems to have a Flash-based logo for all pages. Could be better, could be worse, but it’s something I’d been thinking about doing for some time. I’d better hurry up and finish the Django blog before someone takes my page-based entries and triple-resizer ideas.
What have I been up to recently?
Well, I relaunched/redesigned my wiki (and am using it extensively), watched a ton of Twin Peaks and Sopranos (Twin Peaks: Fantastic main plot, terrible subplots, looks like it might end with zero closure…Sopranos: Oh My God, this show is entertaining. Why didn’t I listen to everyone on the planet?), learned one (1) new card flourish, learned several new fake overhand shuffles (no idea why), spent all of last night in near-total darkness on the exercise machine (stupid Arlington power grid), spent the whooooole weekend with that girl I like, reserved a few domain names I don’t have a use for yet, beat Sly Cooper 2 (one of my new Top Five PS2 Games), agreed to photograph an old friend’s wedding, found a lot of new music, let the cats back into the bedroom, began work on a Wordpress plugin, designed and launched a microsite for a charity, and got fined by a) the IRS and b) the county of Alexandria.
Insert brow-wiping here.
