I can’t even begin to understand what this thing is, I can cut an paste a little from here:
…a complex, eight-dimensional mathematical pattern with 248 points first found in 1887, but only fully understood by mathematicians this year after workings, that, if written out in tiny print, would cover an area the size of Manhattan.
A physicist named Antony Garrett Lisi is proposing that the complexities of E8 might explain the inherent spookiness of so many physical properties. He’s calling it An Exceptionally Simple Theory Of Everything, and while it’s a long shot that this is to be proved a unifying theory, I’m still excited about the fact that we’re at a point where we can draft up and test stuff like this.
Even though the Wiki article looks baffling, the Reception section is fun. I wish I got back papers with notes like “It does not explain why we live in a spacetime with 3 spatial and 1 time-like dimensions.”
