While I always begin comps in black and white and with a grid, I find that I still spend too much time on detail work before the layout is really solid. Given my recent interest in improving my process, I was happy to find Jason Santa Maria’s post about greyboxing, a high-speed way to get layouts in shape before entering Photoshop.
For web design, the key for me is to split my design process up into smaller chunks. If they overlap too much, I have trouble making sure certain things are done before moving on. If I move into Photoshop too soon, my focus is drawn away from the structural build of the page because I may get caught up in finding the right font or color.
AAAAUGH I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. Ahem.
