The Cult Awareness Network (CAN) was founded in the wake of the November 18, 1978 deaths of members of the new religious movement Peoples Temple and assassination of Congressman Leo J. Ryan in Jonestown, Guyana.
To summarize: CAN’s pretty small. They don’t like Scientology. Scientology mass-submits employment applications, and CAN, worried about a takeover from a party with conflicting interests, denies all applications. Scientology then sues for employment discrimination. CAN can’t out-pay Scientology, legally, so they go bankrupt and the church “buys” them. So now, it’s “The New CAN.”
